I’ll have work in Phobias, a group photography exhibition opening this Friday, October 2, at Green Street Photo Collective in Jamaica Plain.
The show was organized with photographer Billy Hickey, who I also work with in my other life as a commercial photographer. It’s a different kind of photography from the theater work, but the two overlap in the way they depend on paying attention to spaces, light, and details. Virginia Nash, another amazing photographer I work with, also has work in the show.
Phobias looks at fear through photographs. Some of the work addresses specific fears, while other photographs deal more with the feeling itself. The photographs will cover the gallery walls, bringing those different interpretations together in one room.
My photograph in the show is from the Proctors Theatre in Newark, New Jersey. It was made looking down from the upper balcony, toward the auditorium below. I have a fear of heights, so getting that shot meant leaning over the edge of the upper balcony to look down into the theater. Just typing that makes my hands feel clammy.
The opening reception is Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at 186 Green Street, Jamaica Plain, as part of JP First Fridays.
